Germany bishop assists in choro at FSSP Mass

by Shawn Tribe

On Gaudete Sunday in Augsburg, Germany, the Bishop of that diocese, Walter Mixa, assisted "in choro" at Mass in the usus antiquior at the church of St. Margareth in Augsburg. The Mass was offered by a Fraternity of St. Peter priest, Fr. Walter Huber.

The bishop also preached and helped in the distribution of Holy Communion.

These sorts of participations on the part of acting bishops, and particularly ordinaries within their own dioceses, are quite important and can do a great deal to help support and foster Pope Benedict's new liturgical movement; a movement which is expressed in both within the context of the usus antiquior and usus recentior.

When diocesan ordinaries do these things, most particularly when done with evident respect, they first of all can help to build toward a more constructive, less polarized climate. Second, they can help to encourage priests who may wish to pursue the activity of re-enchanting their own parish liturgical life, whether that means applying the motu proprio within their parishes, or in their approach to the modern liturgy -- or, even better, both.

news from Scandinavia

There is a new Finnish website devoted to the activities and visits of the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter in Finland. There is also a homepage for the Saint Gregory Society, which will continue to be the general point of reference for traditional liturgy in Finland.

The independent blog Summorum also continues to provide news of various items of Catholic interest in Finland.

The Finnish Catholics also ask our prayer for a good new Bishop for Finland - let us pray for a Bishop who is an enthusiastic teacher of the faith and is willing to support and encourage the traditional liturgy in Finland.

From the Summorum blog, here is a clip of Pilvi Listo playing part of Francois Couperin's Messe Pour les Paroisses at the Agricola Church in Helsinki:

Meanwhile, for 3.5 years, the Institute of Christ the King has been visiting Sweden, with the blessing of the Bishop of Stockholm, H.E. Anders Arborelius, OCD. Msgr Schmitz, Vicar General of the Institute, has met with His Lordship twice. Most of the time, it is Father Marcus Künkel who comes for Mass. There have already been weddings and baptisms in the "usus antiquior". In Rome, one the the Swedish diocesan seminarians helps serving the Institute´s mass on Sundays and feasts.

Beside these visits, there are now, thanks to "Summorum pontificum", three diocesan priests and two Religious (a Franciscan and a young Dominican) who regularly celebrate holy Mass in the classical rite. Mass in the traditional rite is presently being celebrated regularly in Stockholm, Göteborg (Gothenburg), Jonsered and Lund.

One may visit the website of the Association to the Memory of Cardinal Dante, where a certain amount of information and Mass schedules are given also in English and French. The Association is working torwards a renaissance of the Gregorian liturgy and Gregorian chant in Sweden.

The Association also keeps a blog, available here.

F.S.S.P. 20th Anniversary Rome Celebrations...

by J.P. Sonnen

Glory be, FSSP have taken over Rome!

They were all over the streets and churches of Rome earlier this week. At the tombs of the blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, at the papal audience on Wednesday and just this morning all of their European seminarians arrived from their Seminary of St. Peter in Wigratzbad, Bavaria!

Such a treat to see so many countless FSSP priests, seminarians, families, friends and benefactors crawling all over the City in such a spirit joy and prayer and thanksgiving! A twenty year celebration is a big event and such a youthful religious order in the life of the Church is a true blessing that takes ones breath away.

And to celebrate their twentieth anniversary they even just unveiled a really nice glossy covered commemorative book - a book packed with lots of really nice photos illustrating their twenty year "pilgrimage". What I saw was in French, but a must for every family.

This evening Vespers was sung from the Liber Usualis at the FSSP Rome parish, Ss. Trinità dei Pellegrini. The church was packed with countless clergy and laymen alike. As one kid remarked afterwards: "Wow, I never saw so many birettas together in one room!"

Then it was off to dinner for everybody atop the cobbled streets of Rome!

But the highlight? Before Vespers in walked "De Magistris the Great." He is known as perhaps the most beloved of old Vatican prelates. With a smile he entered the sacristy to greet everybody and offer a few warm words of hearty congratulations to all.

More photos available at the Orbis Catholicus blog.

Priestly Fraternity of St Peter

The Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter is a Clerical Society of Apostolic Life of Pontifical right, that is, a community of Roman Catholic priests who do not take religious vows, but who work together for a common mission in the world. The mission of the Fraternity is two-fold: first, the formation and sanctification of priests in the cadre of the traditional liturgy of the Roman rite, and secondly, the pastoral deployment of the priests in the service of the Church.

The Fraternity was founded on July 18, 1988 at the Abbey of Hauterive (Switzerland) by a dozen priests and a score of seminarians. Shortly after the Fraternity's foundation and following upon a request by Cardinal Ratzinger, Bishop Joseph Stimpfle of Augsburg, Germany granted the Fraternity a home in Wigratzbad, a Marian shrine in Bavaria that now lodges the Fraternity's European seminary. In the same month of October there arrived a handful of priests and some thirty seminarians ready to start "from scratch". There are currently almost 200 priests and 110 seminarians in the Fraternity.

A website has been specifically prepared for Vocations to the FSSP.

Chartres pilgrimage

Chartres has been a site of Christian pilgrimage since the Middle Ages. The pilgrimage route was revived before the first world war, and since the 1980s, the association Notre-Dame de Chrétienté has organised an annual 100km (75 miles) pilgrimage from the Cathedral Notre-Dame de Paris to Notre-Dame de Chartres, over three days. About 15,000 pilgrims, mostly young families from all over France, participate every year.

Pilgrims are organized into groups of 20-65 people, that are referred to as "chapters". Each chapter is accompanied by at least one chaplain, who hears confession and gives spiritual direction to each pilgrim who avails himself of the priest's presence.

Here is some footage of a Chartres pilgrimage, when they first see the towers of Chartres (Pentecost afternoon) (German language):

Aaccording to an old tradition, the anthem Salve regina strikes up at this point. Camp is made for the second night about 7:30pm, with the Eucharistic Lord in a specially decorated tent. There is also -- wisely -- a tent for the Order of Malta, who tend to those with feet problems. Eucharistic Adoration continues through the night (or so I think the video infers).

A plenary indulgence is granted, under the usual conditions. Three further videos (German language) can be found here, here and here. For more information about this year's Chartres pilgrimage (10-12 May), please email: chartres@petrusbruderschaft.de

In related news, according to NLM, the Mass in the usus antiquior is now going to be ccelebrated each Sunday in the Church of St. Peter (Eglise Sainte-Pierre) in Chartres, as of Pentecost. This church, which is quite stunning, has been noted by some to be the second most important church in Chartres, following the Cathedral itself.

Annual Retreat - OLGS

The FSSP Our Lady of Guadalupe Seminary offers an annual retreat each Autumn to allow candidates to fulfill their visitation requirement and to provide an opportunity for the seminary application board to interview them. Candidates will need to have completed their application material by 19th May, 2008. The cost of the retreat is $100. If you are interested in attending, you should check availability of space with the Vocations Office in your area.

This retreat is not open to men who are only discerning but such men may contact the seminary (see here for email) to see about making a visit during the academic year. A separate visit does not replace the requirement to make the vocations retreat once a candidate decides to apply.
