Canons Regular of St. John Cantius Vocations Reminder for Prayers

December the 23 in the year of Our Lord 2009 was an important day for the Canons Regulars of St. John Cantius as the newly entered novices (who entered this summer)

"were vested on the Feast of the Assumption with the Roman cassock. Now their religious habits are amplified as they are vested with the Rosary of the Blessed Virgin, the fascia with fringe, and the Roman Collar."

This all took place in the beautiful parish of St. John Cantius Catholic Church in Chicago, IL.
The Canons Regular of St. John Cantius do indeed wear a Roman cassock with a fascia (more commonly called a cincture) around it. Wrapped around the cincture itself is a black colored Rosary of the Blessed  Virgin Mary. A Roman collar is also worn. This beautifully shows that these men are not only dedicated to the beautiful traditions of the Latin (Roman) Rite of the Catholic Church, but the fact that they wear that big, black rosary shows also their dedication to the Blessed Mother.

Notice the canon on the far right side  of the photo photo. There's no way that his rosary will go unnoticed. To those who are discerning a vocation to the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius: you ought to consider praying the Rosary as often as possible. For, just as any good Catholic mother gladly prays for her children and their vocations, our Blessed Mother will do the same for us. Our Blessed Mother indeed loves the priesthood, thus she loves the seminarians in a special way, and she wants to protect them. Welcome her into your life--into your vocation! Could there be more of a traditional thing to do? Look at St. John, one of the first bishops of the Church, he indeed welcomed Mother Mary into his vocation at the command of Christ as He suffered on the cross. Carry a rosary in your pocket, what a defense for your vocation! Not only is it such a powerful spiritual weapon, but if you one day do so happen to become one of these canons, you'll be ready to carry that rosary around as a witness to the love of God through a devotion to Mother Mary (in having that rosary around the cincture). How greatly does this speak of Mother Mary's love and protection of chastity while the rosary is wrapped around the reminder of chastity/humility (the surplice/cincture)?

We should all also pray for the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius: their parish, their priests, novices, etc.

Canons Regular of celebrate their Patronal Feast Day

The Canons Regular of Saint John Cantius report that to celebrate the Solemn Feast of St. John Cantius on October 20th, 2008, the Canons Regular offered a Latin Holy Hour, a Solemn High Mass (1962 Missale Romanum) and Solemn Vespers (1962 Breviarium Romanum).

The Canons Regular also report that "celebrating the day with the Canons Regular were Her Imperial and Royal Highness, Maria Anna, Princess of Galitzine, granddaughter of Blessed Karl of Austria, and her husband Prince Piotr D. Galitzine as well as members of the Royal Family." A reception followed.

Apostolates of the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius

One of the interesting things I learnt through Fr. Dennis Kolinski of the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius, was that the Canons Regular do operate in more than just their famed parish church of St. John Cantius itself.

The Canons now also have an additional parish apostolate, that of St. Peter's Parish in Volo, Illinois.



While on their website, you might also want to look at the beautiful retreat chapel of the Canons Regular, St. Anne's Chapel in Lawton, Michigan. The Eastern feel to the building is no mistake, having been constructed in Poland and then re-constructed in the United States for the Canons Regular.

Canons Regular of St John Cantius

Formerly known as the Society of St. John Cantius, the community of the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius was founded in 1998 by Fr. C. Frank Phillips, C.R. as a Roman Catholic religious community of men dedicated to a restoration of the sacred in the context of parish ministry. Its mission is to help Catholics rediscover a profound sense of the sacred through solemn liturgies, devotions, sacred art, sacred music, as well as instruction in Church heritage, catechetics, and Catholic culture. This mission is reflected in the community's motto: Instaurare Sacra (Restoration of the Sacred).

The purpose of the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius is the formation of a Roman Catholic men's diocesan institute, which shall form and train men to be priests and brothers. On December 23, 1999, the memorial of St. John of Kenty (Cantius), Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I., Archbishop of Chicago, issued a "Decree approving the statutes and erecting the Society of St. John Cantius as a public diocesan association of the Christian faithful with juridic personality." On January 31, 2003, he gave his approval to the recently completed Spiritual Directory and Book of Customs as the local provisionary rule for the Society of St. John Cantius—the next step toward approval of constitutions for the Society as a diocesan institute. Now known as the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius the community's priests have full faculties to celebrate the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and sacraments according to the normative liturgical books of the Roman Rite (in Latin and in the vernacular), as well as all of the 1962 liturgical books

Members of the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius live in common according to the Rule of St. Augustine and their local Rule of Life. Members dedicate themselves to the recovery of the sacred in living the common life, striving for personal sanctity and by seeking the salvation and sanctification of all. In order to achieve these ends, special emphasis will be placed upon the study and implementation of the sacred rites of the Latin Church in their various approved manifestations.

The laity can also affiliate themselves with the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius as Associate Members. These may be men who are considering a religious vocation to the Society or individuals, male or female, married or single, who wish to help the advancement of the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius in their capacity as a member of the laity.

The community's nineteen members include six priests, one deacon, three seminarians, three professed religious brothers and six members in formation. The Canons Regular administer the successful St John Cantius Parish in the Archdiocese of Chicago. St. John’s offers the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass according to the Roman Rite in both the Ordinary and Extraordinary Forms.
